NEW ORLEANS – A small research trial has revealed that early and sustained virologic responses to standard treatment for hepatitis C virus infection were significantly improved when patients received high doses of vitamin A. A MedPage Today article explained how study results showed after 48 weeks of treatment with standard doses of pegylated interferon-alpha2b, ribavirin and 30,000 IU/day of vitamin A, 61.7 percent of patients achieved sustained virologic responses. In comparison, only 42.9 percent of study patients achieved SVR when taking standard therapies without vitamin A. In the trial, adding the vitamin also boosted early virologic response rates that were assessed in patients after 12 weeks. May 5, 2010
