RALEIGH, N.C. – Recent results of a clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine concluded that the drug, rifaximin, significantly reduced the risks of hepatic encephalopathy episodes, when it was compared with a placebo. Hepatic encephalopathy is a chronic complication resulting from liver disease. During a period of six months, treatment with rifaximin maintained hepatic encephalopathy remission more effectively than a placebo. The treatment also reduced the risk of hospitalization due to hepatic encephalopathy. March 25, 2010
